Getting started in Supported Independent Living
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS support category designed to help people with high disability support needs to live independently in their own homes. It provides 24/7 support from trained professionals who can assist with daily living tasks, personal care, and community participation. SIL can provide empowering opportunities to develop your independence in a home of your own! But the process of applying for SIL funding can take some time. Here’s what you can expect when you decide to apply.
How to Apply for SIL Funding
- Set Your Goal: The first step is to clearly define your goal in your NDIS plan. This could be “Exploring Housing Options” or “Seeking Housing.”
- Gather Evidence: To demonstrate your need for SIL, you’ll need to gather specific evidence. This typically involves specialist reports, such as a Functional Capacity Assessment by an Occupational Therapist. These reports will highlight the level of support you require to live independently.
- Explore SIL Providers: Your Support Coordinator can help you connect with a range of SIL providers. This allows you to compare different providers, their services, and their costs.
- Obtain a SIL Quote: Once you’ve chosen a provider, they will prepare a quote outlining the costs of the support services they offer.
- Submit Your Request to the NDIA: Gather all your evidence, including the SIL quote, and submit it to the NDIA. They will review your application and determine your eligibility for SIL funding.
- NDIA Decision: The NDIA will assess your application and make a decision:
- If approved: Congratulations! You’re now eligible for SIL funding. You can start the process of finding a suitable home and settling into your new independent living arrangement.
- If not approved: Don’t be discouraged. You can request a review of the decision or explore other support options with the help of your Support Coordinator.

The Role of a Support Coordinator
A Support Coordinator can be invaluable in your SIL journey. They can assist with:
- Developing your NDIS plan.
- Connecting you with suitable SIL providers.
- Navigating the NDIS process.
- Advocating for your needs.
If you don’t currently have a Support Coordinator, consider applying for this support category through the NDIS.
Remember: The NDIS is a complex system. If you have any questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Support Coordinator, or contact our team with your questions.
