Step out with Confidence: Preparing for SIL

Thinking about moving towards greater independence? For NDIS participants, Supported Independent Living (SIL) can be a fantastic option! It offers a supportive environment while empowering you to take charge of your daily life.

Transitioning to SIL is a big step, but it doesn’t need to feel daunting. Don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through the process!

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL provides support in a shared or individual living arrangement. Think of it as having a helping hand readily available when needed, while still enjoying your own space and privacy.

Is SIL Right for You?

SIL can be a great fit if you’re looking to:

  • Increase your independence: SIL provides the support you need to manage daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, and personal care, but at a level that encourages you to grow your skills, if that’s your goal.
  • Live in a social setting: SIL offers companionship and opportunities to socialise with others.
  • Maintain your privacy: Whether you prefer a shared living arrangement or your own space, SIL allows you to choose a living environment that suits your needs.

Planning Your Transition to SIL

Here are some steps to consider when planning your move to SIL:

  1. Talk to Your Support Network: Discuss your aspirations with your family, friends, and current support workers. Their input can be valuable during the planning process.
  1. Review Your NDIS Plan: Supported Independent Living funding can be included in your NDIS plan. Work with your planner and Support Coordinator to ensure your SIL needs are reflected in your plan.
  1. Explore Your Options: Research different SIL providers in your area. Consider factors like location, types of support offered, and living arrangements.
  1. Connect with Potential Providers: Schedule visits with several SIL providers to get a feel for their environment and approach. Ask questions and clarify any doubts you might have.
  1. Make Your Choice: Choose a SIL provider that aligns with your needs and personality.

Tips for a Smooth Transition:

  • Start Early: Give yourself ample time to research options and adjust to the idea of moving.
  • Prepare for Change: Moving can be stressful for everyone. Talk through any anxieties you have with your support network.
  • Pack Familiar Items: Bring things that make your new living space feel comfortable and personal.
  • Maintain Existing Routines: While adjusting to a new environment, stick to familiar routines as much as possible to maintain a sense of normalcy.

Remember: You’re not alone! Your current support workers, NDIS planner, Support Coordinator and the SIL provider will all be there to guide you through the transition and ensure a smooth move towards greater independence.
